This is a great short video about the history of race in the US. The amount of history that goes into the problems of race in America today is massively understated and, unfortunately, generally unknown to the general population. Much of it was unknown to me as well even though it has been of interest to me over the years. It is hard for New Zealanders to have an understanding of this because we relate it to our own experiences which are nothing like the black Americans have had to endure. We don't lock up our own people for 20, 30 or 50 years for next to nothing. We don't have the militarized police that are armed and ready to shoot in an instant (if your black). I used to joke that in America I just hide out in the open and being a white man I will never be questioned or even if I am it will be very friendly, not the normal black experience.I lived in the States and Canada for many years and really loved it but I was always given the benefit of a doubt because I was white and sounded like Crocodile Dundee to them.Several times I may have been arrested except that my whiteness and accent stepped in and saved me.
